DR. STEFANO GITTO

Transplant Hepatologist and Researcher at the University of Florence

Dr. Stefano Gitto (Pietrasanta, November 18, 1982) graduated in Medicine and Surgery at the University of Bologna in 2007 with a thesis relating to the clinical management of the patient candidate for liver transplantation (supervisor: Prof. Pietro Andreone). His training course continues  obtaining a PhD in Applied Physiology and Pathophysiology with a thesis concerning the hepatic stem cell niche (supervisor: Prof. Mauro Bernardi). During the years of PhD he carries out an intense scientific and clinical activity dealing with the pre and post-transplant phases (Transplant Center of Bologna). In 2012 he began the School of Specialization in Diseases of the Digestive System (headquarters of the Policlinico di Modena, head office of the University of Bologna). From 2012 to 2016 it increases its core curriculum concerning the hepatopathic patient and the clinical problems of the patient undergoing liver transplantation (Modena Transplant Center). During his specialization he also spent a short period at the Gastroenterology and Hepatology Unit of the Hospital La Fe (Transplant Center of Valencia). In 2016 he specialized with a thesis on the metabolic problems of the liver transplant patient (supervisor: Prof. Erica Villa). He then returned with a Research Grant to the Bolognese University, continuing the clinical and scientific activity set up and focused on the transplant patient. Since 2018 he is Researcher at the Department of Experimental and Clinical Medicine of the University of Florence. Plays  clinical activity at the Operating Unit of Internal Medicine and Hepatology of the University Hospital of Florence directed first by Prof. Giacomo Laffi and subsequently by Prof. Fabio Marra. Dr. Gitto is currently the referent of the Transplant Clinic of the aforementioned Unit. He obtained the professional qualification of Transplant Hepatologist through AISF (Italian Association for the Study of the Liver). He obtained the National Scientific Qualification as Professor of II level in Gastroenterology and Internal Medicine. He is the author of numerous  scientific articles relating to liver disease and specifically liver transplantation (bibliometric indicators from scopus.com: publications 80, h-index 20, citations 1511).
